Kiasmos

Kiasmos (IS)

Icelandic multi instrumentalist and classical composer Ólafur Arnalds and musician and electronic producer Janus Rasmussen began their minimal, experimental techno collaboration in 2009 in Reykjavík. After a few years of harnessing the harmony among their different styles, they released their first EP, Thrown, on Erased Tapes in 2012, followed in 2014 by a more conceptual self titled album on the same label. Arnalds, also a sound engineer and once a hardcore metal drummer, loops and alters acoustic piano, stringed instruments, electronics and unexpected rhythms to make his music, both for Kiasmos and solo, including the eerie score for UK television show Broadchurch. Rasmussen, also a member of electro pop band Bloodgroup, weaves synthesizers, drum machines and delay effects into the duo’s sound, ultimately creating with Arnalds a textured, orchestral sound anchored by a driving beat. Where their recorded works explore introspective emotional states, live, the duo are known to work their pieces into a frenzied release.
